Tunney’s Picks of the Week – Week 4

I’m Tunney Barrett, Director of Sales & Marketing here at the Staybridge Suites Hotel New Orleans Downtown and it’s time for my Picks of the Week.     This week some real New Orleans classics. Enjoy!

If you are having one of those days that you just want a big, juicy, tender steak, New Orleans has that too. In 1934 Mr. John Vojkovich opened Crescent City Steakhouse. If you think that chain steakhouse that serves the steak on the sizzling platter started that, you are wrong. It started, and is still the best, at Crescent City Steakhouse. They offer prime, dry-aged beef that is cut in-house and cooked to your desire. Guys, be romantic and reserve one of the curtained booths! Left on Poydras, right on Camp, Left on Canal. Then right on Broad Street, between Orleans and Esplanade. 504-266-0573. Closed Monday & Tuesday.

Price: $$$$

In that same general area is a little neighborhood place called Katie’s. There are several things here I just love. First, the Crawfish Beignets. An overstuffed beignet filled with la crawfish, jalapeno peppers, onions, and three kinds of cheese; fried then topped with a jalapeno aioli. Then there is the Fried Green Tomato & Shrimp Remoulade. Lightly breaded slices of fresh green tomatoes topped with grilled gulf shrimp and our remoulade sauce. And I’m a fan of the Pasta Pick. Your choice of: penne, fettuccine, or angel hair and – marinara, marsala, alfredo, bucktown alfredo, olive oil & garlic, or garlic butter and a whole list of meats, veggies and cheeses. Take the Canal Streetcar to Telemachus. Then walk one block downtown to Iberville.

Our absolute favorite place to sit with friends and talk over some great wine is Bar Vin. It’s a small place that Patrick has packed with great wines. Sit in the bar or in the courtyard. It’s elegant but comfortable. Great place for a glass of wine before or after dinner. On Bienville between Royal & Bourbon. My wife and I love this place!

This week’s attraction is lunch at Antoine’s. Look, in the summer, Monday through Saturday, Antoine’s offers a three course lunch for $20.15. You can’t get lunch at Applebee’s for $20! There is a choice of three or four entrees. You CANNOT beat this!

Those are my picks this week. So, go forth and eat!
